Fastest Broadband Connections in the World

Check out the above link. It bothers me that several East Asian countries and many countries in Europe are ahead of the United States in overall broadband connection speed. Out of the top 100 fastest cities, Asian cities account for 2/3 of them. That there are only 18 U.S. cities in the top 100 is a stunning statistic.

Forward-thinking infrastructure changes used to be a unique quality of the United States, but now so many countries’ governments are injecting money into technological initiatives that allow for greater productivity and convenience in everyday life. Supporting programs in telecommunications (and, of course, other important areas of research like energy) is imperative in our country’s ability to stay competitive in an increasingly global market. It’s clear that in the past decade we have, perhaps unknowingly, started to assume a second-mover approach to technical implementation, but this is not the proper way to go in order to maintain international respect and envy. The broadband speed statistic is only a microcosm of the problems our country will face in the coming years.
